1. Love is the most important commandment
Matthew 22:37-39 sums up the whole law in loving God and loving your neighbor. Jesus did not say love was one quality among others, He said it was the foundation on which “all the law and the prophets” depend.
2. Without love, other qualities lose their value
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 says that speaking in tongues, having faith to move mountains, or giving away all your possessions, without love, “I am nothing” or it “profiteth me nothing.” Even impressive spiritual actions lose their meaning without genuine love behind them.
3. Love produces the other qualities of the fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 lists “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” as one single fruit, not as a separate list. Genuine love tends to naturally produce patience and kindness toward others.
4. Humility and love go together
Philippians 2:3-4 asks believers to esteem others “better than themselves,” and to look out for others’ interests too. Genuine love almost always requires setting aside your own pride.
5. Love holds steady even when other qualities fail
1 Peter 4:8 says love “shall cover the multitude of sins.” When you fail at patience or wisdom, genuine love still offers a way back and toward reconciliation.
Growing in love is not one spiritual goal among many others, it is the root that makes it possible for the other spiritual qualities to grow in a genuine way.
