What does the Bible say about love

The Bible does not talk about a single kind of love, it describes several distinct kinds, each with its own purpose and expression.

The Bible does not talk about a single kind of love, it describes several distinct kinds, each with its own purpose and expression.

1. Love for God comes first

Matthew 22:37 asks you to love God “with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” The Bible presents this love as the foundation all the others depend on, not as one category among many.

2. Love for your neighbor is the second most important commandment

Matthew 22:39 places it right after love for God, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” This love is not limited to family or close friends, it extends, according to the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10, to anyone who needs help.

3. Love for enemies is the highest and hardest standard

Matthew 5:44 asks you to “love your enemies, bless them that curse you.” This kind of love does not depend on the other person deserving it, that is precisely what sets it apart from the natural love anyone would have for someone they already like.

4. God’s love for us is the model behind all the others

1 John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” The ability to love in the ways described above is not born from isolated effort, it is born from first receiving that same love from God.

5. Romantic and family love are also described with care

Books like Song of Solomon celebrate romantic love within marriage, and passages like Ephesians 6:4 speak about the love between parents and children. The Bible does not ignore these everyday forms of love, it treats them with the same care as the broader commandments.

Biblical love is not a single feeling, it is a network of relationships, toward God, toward others, even toward people who are hard to love, all connected by the same love God showed first.
