What does the Bible say about self love and self care

The Bible does not use the phrase “self love” the way it is used today, but it does assume, as something natural, that people take care of themselves, and it builds other commands on that assumption.

1. Loving your neighbor assumes a healthy sense of self care

Matthew 22:39 says, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” This command would not make sense if caring for yourself were something wrong, the Bible takes it for granted as a natural starting point.

2. Your body has value because it is not only yours

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 describes the body as “the temple of the Holy Ghost.” Taking care of your body, resting, eating well, is not vanity, it is caring for something Scripture describes as sacred.

3. Rest is not laziness, it is part of God’s design

Genesis 2:2-3 shows God Himself resting after creating the world. If God built rest into the rhythm of creation, ignoring it entirely is not a sign of greater spiritual dedication.

4. Healthy self care is not the same as selfishness

Philippians 2:3-4 asks believers to do nothing “through vainglory,” and also to look out for the interests of others, not only their own. The difference is that healthy self care equips you to serve others, while selfishness closes you in on yourself.

5. Your worth does not depend on your productivity

Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Your worth before God is established from your creation, it does not depend on how much you accomplish or produce each day.

Taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, does not contradict your faith, it is part of wisely stewarding what God has already placed in your hands. GodCalm.com offers devotionals focused on spiritual and emotional wellbeing, if you are looking for additional support in this process.
