How can I grow in developing a Christlike character
Becoming like Christ is not about acting perfect, it is about letting the way He treated people slowly become the way you treat people too.
Becoming like Christ is not about acting perfect, it is about letting the way He treated people slowly become the way you treat people too.
1. Start by actually getting to know Him
It is hard to imitate someone you do not know well. Reading the Gospels, where Jesus’ interactions with people are described in detail, is the first practical step. John 13:15 says, “I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”
2. Humility comes before any achievement
Philippians 2:5-7 describes Jesus, who “made himself of no reputation,” setting aside His position to serve others. A Christlike character puts serving others above being recognized.
3. Real change comes from the Spirit, not just effort
Galatians 5:22-23 calls this “the fruit of the Spirit,” love, joy, peace, patience, among others. In plain words, this is not about faking these qualities through sheer willpower, it is about letting God shape them in you over time.
4. Practice it in everyday moments, not only spiritual ones
Colossians 3:12-13 asks believers to “put on… bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering,” in daily interactions with others. Character shows more in how you treat someone on a bad day than in your prayer time.
5. Expect a process, not instant perfection
2 Corinthians 3:18 talks about being transformed “from glory to glory,” an image of gradual change, not an instant one. It is normal to fail along the way, what matters is continuing to move forward.
Developing a Christlike character is a lifelong process, not a goal you reach overnight. Every small decision to treat someone well counts.
