What are the Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments are a set of instructions God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai, and they remain a widely recognized moral foundation to this day.
The Ten Commandments are a set of instructions God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai, and they remain a widely recognized moral foundation to this day.
1. The first commandments focus on the relationship with God
Exodus 20:3-8 includes having no other gods, making no idols, not using God’s name in vain, and keeping a day of rest. These first four place the relationship with God as the foundation before addressing the relationship with other people.
2. The following commandments focus on the relationship with other people
Exodus 20:12-17 includes honoring your parents, not killing, not committing adultery, not stealing, not bearing false witness, and not coveting. These six show that moral life is not limited to the spiritual, it extends directly to how you treat the people around you.
3. They were not an arbitrary list of rules
Exodus 20:2 opens by reminding the people that God had already freed them from slavery in Egypt. The commandments were given after that deliverance, as a guide for living in freedom, not as a condition for earning it.
4. Jesus summarized them in two central principles
Matthew 22:37-40 says loving God and loving your neighbor are the most important commandments, on which “hang all the law and the prophets.” The Ten Commandments can be understood as a more detailed expression of these two principles.
5. They remain relevant, not outdated
Even though Christians are not under Old Testament law the same way Israel was, the moral principles behind these commandments, honesty, respect for life, faithfulness, keep showing up throughout the New Testament.
The Ten Commandments are not only a historical document, they describe a pattern of life that prioritizes respect for God and for other people, something that remains relevant today.
