What does the Bible say about Jesus being God
This is one of the central claims of Christianity. The Bible supports it in several different ways, not just with one isolated verse.
This is one of the central claims of Christianity. The Bible supports it in several different ways, not just with one isolated verse.
1. Jesus Himself said it directly
John 10:30 records Jesus saying, “I and my Father are one.” The religious leaders of the time understood this so clearly as a claim to divinity that, according to the same passage, they tried to stone Him for it.
2. The Gospels describe Him as existing before creation
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The following verses make clear this “Word” became flesh, referring to Jesus. This describes an eternal existence, not a being who started existing in Bethlehem.
3. He received worship without correcting those who worshipped Him
John 20:28 records Thomas saying to Jesus, “My Lord and my God.” Jesus did not correct him or reject that worship, something an ordinary human being would have done immediately, based on the Bible’s own pattern elsewhere.
4. He is credited with actions only God can do
Mark 2:5-7 shows Jesus forgiving sins, something the religious leaders present immediately recognized as something “God only” can forgive. Jesus did not correct that reaction, He kept acting with that same authority.
5. Paul describes Him with language reserved only for God
Colossians 2:9 says that in Jesus “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” This kind of language, repeated across several New Testament letters, leaves no room for understanding Jesus as merely a teacher or a prophet.
The Bible presents Jesus as fully God and fully human at the same time, a mystery Christian theology has explained over centuries, but one the New Testament affirms fairly clearly from the start.
