What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
This is one of the hardest passages in the Gospels, and also one of the most misunderstood. It is worth looking at the exact context in which Jesus said it.
This is one of the hardest passages in the Gospels, and also one of the most misunderstood. It is worth looking at the exact context in which Jesus said it.
1. Jesus’ direct warning
Matthew 12:31-32 (KJV) says, “all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” It is one of the most serious statements Jesus makes in the Gospels.
2. The context, crediting Satan for God’s own work
This passage comes right after the Pharisees watched Jesus cast out demons and said He did it “by Beelzebub” (Matthew 12:24). This was not ignorance, it was consciously rejecting, and calling evil, what was clearly the work of God.
3. It is not a momentary mistake, it is a sustained rejection
Hebrews 3:15 warns, “Harden not your hearts.” Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit describes a pattern of a hardened heart that refuses, repeatedly and on purpose, to acknowledge the truth, not a passing doubt or a bad thought.
4. Whoever worries about having committed it probably has not
This is one of the most comforting truths in the passage, the very worry about having committed this sin reveals a heart still sensitive to the Spirit’s conviction, which is the opposite of the hardening the passage describes.
5. There is security for anyone genuinely seeking God
John 10:28 promises, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Anyone seeking God’s forgiveness and responding to the Spirit’s conviction is not at risk of having committed this sin.
Rather than fearing you have crossed some invisible line, the invitation in this passage is to not quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19), but to stay open to His work.
