Who created God

This question starts from a very natural assumption, that everything that exists needs a cause. But the Bible describes God as something different from everything else that exists.

This question starts from a very natural assumption, that everything that exists needs a cause. But the Bible describes God as something different from everything else that exists.

1. God is described as eternal, not as something that began to exist

Psalm 90:2 says, “from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” This means God did not have a beginning, the question “who created Him” assumes God came into existence at some point, and Scripture says that is not the case.

2. His own name points to this idea

In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asks His name, God answers, “I AM THAT I AM.” This name describes someone whose existence does not depend on anything outside of Himself, unlike everything created, which does depend on a cause.

3. Everything that had a beginning needs a cause, God did not have a beginning

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” God is described as already existing before time itself began, so the question of what was “before” God does not apply in the same way.

4. This is not an easy dodge, it is consistent with how logic works

If everything needed a cause without exception, it would create an infinite chain impossible to explain. The idea of an eternal, uncaused being, that is, God, is the explanation that coherently stops that chain.

5. It is a mystery the Bible acknowledges, not one it hides

Job 11:7 asks, “Canst thou by searching find out God?” The Bible does not claim that every part of God’s nature is fully understandable to the human mind, and it is honest about that limit.

The question of who created God starts by treating God as just another thing inside the universe. The Bible describes Him as the eternal foundation behind everything else, not as one more link in the chain.
