What roles does the Bible assign to husbands and wives
This is a topic where it helps to read the whole passage, not just one isolated verse, because the surrounding context changes how it is understood quite a bit.
This is a topic where it helps to read the whole passage, not just one isolated verse, because the surrounding context changes how it is understood quite a bit.
1. The starting point is mutual submission
Ephesians 5:21 says, “submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God,” right before talking about husbands and wives. This verse frames everything that follows, neither one acts independently of the other.
2. Husbands are asked to love with sacrifice
Ephesians 5:25 says, “love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” The standard for the husband is not authority, it is loving at the level of total sacrifice, putting the wife above his own interests.
3. Wives are asked for respect within that relationship of love
Ephesians 5:33 says, “the wife see that she reverence her husband.” This happens inside a relationship where mutual submission and sacrificial love have already been established, not as a hierarchy of worth between people.
4. Both roles aim at the same goal, serving each other
1 Peter 3:7 asks husbands to treat their wives “giving honour unto the wife.” These roles are not describing unequal power, they describe different responsibilities inside a relationship of equal worth before God.
5. The biblical model prioritizes service, not control
Mark 10:45 describes Jesus as one who “came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” That same spirit of service, applied to marriage, completely changes how these roles are understood, not as power over the other person, but as giving toward the other person.
These roles are not well understood outside the frame of mutual love and respect that surrounds them. Read in isolation, they invite misunderstanding, read together, they describe a relationship of shared self giving.
