What does the Bible say about marriage

Marriage in the Bible is described as far more than a legal contract or a ceremony, it is a union with a specific purpose.

Marriage in the Bible is described as far more than a legal contract or a ceremony, it is a union with a specific purpose.

1. It was God’s idea from the beginning

Genesis 2:24 says, “a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Marriage is not a later cultural invention, it appears in the first pages of the Bible as part of the original design.

2. It is based on commitment, not only feelings

Ephesians 5:25 asks husbands to “love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” This kind of love is a constant decision to give, it does not depend on romantic feeling always being present.

3. It includes mutual respect, not a hierarchy of worth

Ephesians 5:33 asks for love from the husband and respect from the wife, inside a relationship described as mutual submission in verse 21, “submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Neither one is worth less than the other.

4. It is a permanent union, not a conditional agreement

Matthew 19:6 says, “what therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Biblical marriage is understood as a long term commitment, not something that lasts only while things are going well.

5. It reflects something bigger than the relationship itself

Ephesians 5:32 calls marriage a “mystery,” comparing it to the relationship between Christ and the church. A good marriage does not only benefit the couple, it also shows the world what faithful, steady love looks like.

Biblical marriage is not only about finding the right person, it is about committing to love steadily, even on days when the feeling is not there.
