What is the unforgivable sin
Few questions cause as much spiritual anxiety as this one. It is worth answering calmly, because the fear of having committed it is almost always, in itself, proof that you have not.

1. The Bible does name one unforgivable sin
Matthew 12:31-32 (KJV) says, “the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” It is the only sin Scripture explicitly describes with that word.
2. It is not a curse word or a passing thought
The context, Matthew 12:22-32, shows religious leaders who watched God’s power at work right in front of them, and chose to call it the work of Satan on purpose. It is not an angry curse, or a momentary doubt about God.
3. It is a total, sustained rejection, not an isolated moment
Mark 3:28-29 connects this sin to being “in danger of eternal damnation,” describing a continuous pattern of rejecting the truth, not a single stumble.
4. Feeling guilty about your sins is not a sign you committed this one
On the contrary, this sin is described as a hardened heart, unresponsive to the Spirit’s conviction. Feeling troubled about having offended God actually shows your heart is still sensitive, not hardened.
5. Anyone genuinely seeking God is not in danger
1 John 1:9 promises forgiveness to anyone who confesses their sins. There is no list of ordinary sins God refuses to forgive when there is genuine repentance, the unforgivable sin is specifically the final, definitive rejection of that same offer of forgiveness.
If you are worried about having committed this sin, that very worry is evidence that you have not. God keeps extending grace to anyone who seeks Him.
