1. Practice respect in small things, not only big ones
Romans 12:10 asks believers to give “preference to one another in honour.” How you talk about your partner when they are not there, how you respond during disagreement, says more about your character than big romantic gestures.
2. Be honest, even when it is uncomfortable
Ephesians 4:25 asks you, “putting away lying, speak every man truth.” A relationship built on half truths, even if it feels easier in the moment, becomes fragile over time.
3. Keep healthy physical and emotional boundaries
1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 asks each person to know “how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.” Having clear boundaries is not a lack of love, it is a way of protecting the other person and the relationship itself.
4. Listen to understand, not just to respond
James 1:19 advises being “swift to hear, slow to speak.” Many relationship conflicts grow not because nobody talks, but because nobody actually listens before responding.
5. Invest in your own character, not only in the relationship
Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit, love, patience, self control, among others. Working on becoming a better person, regardless of the relationship, almost always improves how you treat your partner too.
Being a good boyfriend or girlfriend looks a lot like being a good friend, with one more layer of closeness. It is built through daily consistency, not occasional gestures.
