Is suicide considered a sin
This is a deeply painful question for many people, whether because they are struggling with these thoughts themselves, or because they lost someone this way. It deserves an honest, and above all compassionate, answer.

1. The Bible treats human life as sacred
Genesis 1:27 describes every person as created “in the image of God.” This worth does not depend on how you feel in any given moment, and it does not diminish when someone is going through extreme pain.
2. The Bible does not give a simple yes or no answer in a single verse
Unlike other sins that are named directly, the Bible has no verse that explicitly declares suicide unforgivable. The few recorded cases, like Saul’s in 1 Samuel 31, are narrated without an explicit judgment attached to the account.
3. God understands deep despair
Several biblical figures, including Elijah in 1 Kings 19:4 and Job in Job 3, expressed a wish to die in the middle of extreme anguish. God responded to both with care, not rejection, showing that this level of pain does not push someone away from God.
4. God’s forgiveness does not depend on the circumstances of death
Romans 8:38-39 says nothing can separate a believer “from the love of God.” Salvation rests on faith in Jesus Christ, not on the exact circumstances of a person’s final moment of life.
5. God offers real hope for anyone struggling right now
Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” If you are struggling with these thoughts right now, that does not push you away from God, it is exactly the kind of pain He promises to stay close to.
If you, or someone you know, is thinking about suicide, please reach out for help right now, talk to a mental health professional, a trusted pastor, or contact a crisis helpline in your country. You do not have to go through this alone, and asking for help is an act of courage, not weakness.
