Attributes of God: How the Bible Describes His Character and Nature
The "attributes of God" are the qualities theologians use to summarize what Scripture reveals about who God is. The Bible does not contain one table titled "God's attributes."
The "attributes of God" are the qualities theologians use to summarize what Scripture reveals about who God is.
The Bible does not contain one table titled "God's attributes."
The classification is a tool for organizing biblical teaching.
God Is Eternal
Psalm 90:2 describes God from everlasting to everlasting.
God is not portrayed as a created being.
He is Creator.
God Is Self-Sufficient
Acts 17:24-25 says God is not served as though He needed anything.
Christian theology calls this aseity.
God did not create because He was incomplete or lonely.
God Is Omnipotent
Omnipotence means God possesses all power.
It does not mean logical contradictions become meaningful tasks.
Scripture presents God as able to accomplish His purposes.
His power never acts independently from His character.
God Is Omniscient
Psalm 139 portrays God as knowing words, paths, and thoughts.
Christian traditions differ over how divine foreknowledge relates to human freedom, but the biblical center is God's complete knowledge.
God Is Omnipresent
Psalm 139 asks where anyone could flee from God's presence.
Omnipresence does not mean God is identical with the universe.
Christian faith distinguishes Creator from creation while affirming divine presence everywhere.
God Is Holy
Isaiah 6 presents heavenly beings declaring God holy.
Holiness includes moral purity and divine uniqueness.
God cannot simply be reduced to our changing preferences.
God Is Just
The prophets repeatedly condemn oppression because injustice contradicts God's character.
Belief in a just God should affect how believers treat vulnerable people.
God Is Love
1 John 4:8 says God is love.
Biblical love includes faithfulness, mercy, sacrifice, and truth.
John 3:16 connects divine love with the mission of Christ.
God Is Merciful
Exodus 34:6-7 describes God as compassionate, gracious, patient, and rich in faithful love.
Mercy does not mean indifference to evil.
It means God turns toward people in need of grace.
God Is Faithful and True
Scripture presents God as reliable and truthful.
That does not mean every personal expectation is a divine promise.
Believers need to distinguish what God has actually promised from what they merely hope for.
God Is Good and Wise
The Bible celebrates God's goodness and wisdom while also allowing difficult questions about suffering.
Job, Psalms, and Habakkuk show that trust and questioning can coexist.
God Is Unchanging
Malachi 3:6 says God does not change.
Christian theology uses the term immutability for the stability of God's nature and character.
Scripture also portrays God responding relationally to human actions.
The doctrine therefore should not be reduced to the idea that God is static or incapable of relationship.
Why Do God's Attributes Matter?
Our picture of God shapes our lives.
If we imagine God only as power, we may justify domination.
If we imagine only mercy without justice, we may minimize evil.
If we imagine only judgment, we may live in constant terror.
Scripture offers a fuller portrait.
Conclusion
God's attributes help organize what Scripture reveals.
God is eternal, powerful, knowing, present, holy, just, loving, merciful, faithful, wise, and good.
These are not separate pieces of God.
They describe the one God Christians are called to know, love, and trust.
