Is watching pornography a sin

The word “pornography” does not appear in the Bible, but the principles that do appear make God’s view on this fairly clear.

1. Jesus speaks directly about the look, not only the physical act

Matthew 5:28 says, “whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” According to Jesus, the problem starts in the mind and in what you choose to look at, not only in physical contact.

2. It reduces a real person to an object to use

Pornography presents real people, who have real worth before God, as something to consume and discard. This directly contradicts Genesis 1:27, which describes every person as created “in the image of God.”

3. It shapes how you see other people

Job 31:1 says, “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” Job understood that what you choose to look at repeatedly shapes how you think about people in general, not only in that moment.

4. The Bible calls for fleeing, not just resisting

1 Corinthians 6:18 says plainly, “Flee fornication.” It does not suggest staying near the temptation and trying to resist through willpower, it suggests removing yourself from the environment where the temptation happens.

5. Real forgiveness is available, this does not define you forever

1 John 1:9 promises, “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” Struggling with this, even repeatedly, does not disqualify you from forgiveness or from real change.

Yes, the Bible treats this as sin, not because it is an outdated rule, but because of how it shapes the way you see people and yourself. And it also makes clear there is a real path toward restoration.
