What does the Bible say about lust

Lust appears in the Bible as a disordered desire that puts your own gratification above another person’s worth and dignity.

1. It starts in the heart, before any action

Mark 7:21-22 says that “from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts… adulteries, fornications.” The Bible locates the origin of lust on the inside, not in the outside situation that triggers it.

2. It is different from the sexual desire God designed

Within marriage, sexual desire is described in a positive way, even celebrated in books like Song of Solomon. Lust is that same desire disconnected from commitment and used to take from someone else without giving anything real in return.

3. It feeds on what you choose to look at and think about

Philippians 4:8 asks you to think “on whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure.” What you repeatedly take in, whether visual content or thoughts you let run unchecked, trains your mind in one direction or another.

4. It has real consequences, not only spiritual ones

Proverbs 6:32 warns that whoever commits adultery “lacketh understanding” and “destroyeth his own soul.” Unchecked lust often ends up affecting real relationships, it does not stay contained inside the mind.

5. It is defeated by fleeing, not just by willpower

2 Timothy 2:22 says, “Flee also youthful lusts.” The biblical strategy is not to stay in the tempting situation while trying to resist, it is to remove yourself from the environment where the temptation keeps happening.

The Bible does not condemn desire itself, it condemns using it to take from another person without real commitment or respect. Recognizing the difference is the first step to handling it well.
