How can I discern between personal desire and God’s will
Telling the difference between what you want and what God wants is not always simple, but the Bible gives a few practical signals to help you discern.
Telling the difference between what you want and what God wants is not always simple, but the Bible gives a few practical signals to help you discern.
1. Check whether it contradicts what Scripture already teaches
Romans 12:2 asks you to “be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed.” If a desire directly contradicts a clear biblical principle, you already have your answer, no further signs needed.
2. Examine where the desire is coming from
James 4:1-3 connects some desires to selfish “lusts” that lead to conflict. Ask yourself whether the desire mainly seeks your own benefit, regardless of how it affects others, that is usually a warning sign.
3. Seek advice from people mature in their faith
Proverbs 15:22 says, “in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” A desire that feels completely right on the inside can look different once you share it with someone trustworthy and more experienced.
4. Pay attention to peace, or the lack of it, after praying
Colossians 3:15 asks that “the peace of God rule in your hearts.” This does not replace careful discernment, but a persistent uneasiness after praying about a decision is usually worth paying attention to.
5. Take small steps instead of making irreversible decisions right away
Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” Moving forward with small steps, instead of committing immediately to something that cannot be undone, leaves room for God to correct course if needed.
Discernment rarely arrives as a dramatic sign, it is usually built by combining Scripture, prayer, the counsel of others, and an honest look at your own motives.
